Skate 4

After a 10 year hiatus, the Skate series is set to return with Skate 4. The announcement received more than 44,000 retweets and 141,000 likes. However, one of the bigger reasons for the series’s revival is due to EA’s belief that Skate 4 can capitalize on industry trends.

Skate 4 Possibly Open-World & Community Content Rich

CEO, Andrew Wilson, spoke to VGC saying “You take a game like Skate, and while skateboarding in and of itself has tremendous appeal to a huge, global audience, there’s also another secular trend that’s happening inside our industry around user-generated content, open-world and interaction.”

He went on to explain skateboarding is not just a sport. For many, skateboarding unlocks their access to art and culture. Players can expect a whole new world to be unlocked through Skate 4. Wilson notes skating has its own appeal. However, the addition of community content and exploration will reach far beyond that.

Whether these features will function with cross-play has not been determined. Although, Wilson believes whatever form these trends take in Skate 4, they will be beneficial in growing the franchise for the future.

Skate 4 is said to be in the early stages of development with an expected release date of 2022. Despite having EA having its own reasons, a lot of the revival can be attributed to the popular following online. Skate 3 launched in 2010, ten years ago, then made comeback in sales in 2014. In 2016, Skate 3 made it into the Xbox One compatibility program, then saw its servers revived by EA.
