What Is the Greatest Sports Game Ever?

Every March, the focus of the sports world centers on the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

March Madness has become one of the biggest American sports traditions, but that doesn’t mean it has to be specifically for real-life sport.

What about sports video games?

Over the years there has been no shortage of great sports games. And though many sites have put together their own list of the best of the best, no one has put the power into the hands of the reader.

That is, until today.

Sports Gamers Online is proud to present “SGO Madness: The Greatest Sports Game Tournament“. The name may not roll off the tongue, but the idea sure does.

Fans will not only vote in each round, but the field will be determined by them as well. From now until Sunday, March 11, SGO will be taking nominations via Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and more.

By using the hashtag #SGOMadness, you can submit any sports game that’s ever been released. From Madden NFL to WWF No Mercy, all sports titles will be accepted. The only caveat is that fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter do not qualify.

Now, do not confuse greatest with best, though it’s hard not to do. With this bracket, the games that will be chosen will not be selected simply by how good they were. They will be chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Following/Popularity
  • Industry Impact
  • Quality
  • Lasting Appeal

As far as eligibility is concerned, we will adhere to the following rules:

  • Depending on nominations, we will look to limit the number of times a series is represented to two. Some exceptions will be made.
  • Fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter do not quality; Wrestling games, on the other hand, do qualify.
  • eSports titles like League of Legends and CS:GO do not qualify

Now, let’s move on to the dates of everything:

Pre-Tournament Dates:

  • Nominations: Wednesday, March 7 – Sunday, March 11.
  • Bracket Reveals: Monday, March 12 – Thursday, March 15

Tournament Voting:

  • First Round — Monday, March 19 — Thursday, March 22
  • Round of 32 — Friday, March 23 — Monday, March 26
  • Sweet 16 — Tuesday, March 27 — Friday, March 30
  • Elite 8 — Saturday, March 31 — Tuesday, April 3
  • Final 4 — Wednesday, April 4 — Saturday, April 7
  • FINALS — Sunday, April 8 — Tuesday, April 10

So this is your chance, sports gamers. Let your voices be heard, and help us determine the greatest sports game of all-time.
