Did we just see the cover of MLB The Show 21? Also, the first Xbox cover with a PlayStation logo may have just been revealed. Instagram user anerdydad posted a picture that potentially reveals the cover of the next entry in the MLB The Show series. The image features San Diego Padres Shortstop, Fernando Tatis Jr., as the game’s potential cover athlete.

The Evolution of Competitive Play in Sports Gaming Communities

A few weeks ago, MLB The Show announced on twitter there would be news on MLB The Show 21 in February. It’s possible anerdydad just took the wind out of their sails here. These days, fake leaks are a dime a dozen. However, there are a couple of reasons this one could hold up. First, the design seems to match current-generation sports game covers, stylistically. Second, the existence of both a PlayStation and Xbox cover is in line with MLB The Show‘s announcement that future games in the series would eventually be coming to other consoles. Finally, anerdydad has a positive reputation leaking upcoming Funko Pop! figures. It’s fully possible he has gotten ahold of another scoop.

What do we know about MLB The Show 21?

Admittedly, not much. A leak like this could be easily verified if San Diego Studio had announced this year’s cover athlete. We knew that Javier Baez would be on the cover of MLB The Show 20 in October of 2019, three months before the first gameplay trailer dropped. For MLB The Show 21, Sony has kept info tightly sealed, including a decision on whether or not this year’s game will be delayed. Initially, it was internally confirmed that MLB The Show 21 would be coming to both Xbox and PlayStation, as the leaked cover suggests. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may have disrupted these plans.

If the leak is true, it would be Tatis Jr.’s second big “cover” of 2021. His first? The coveted Topps Number 1 Card for the 2021 baseball card set. He’s made a splash in his first two years starting in the MLB, but is he The Show cover material? San Diego Studios might think so.
