NBA 2K24 introduced a brand-new engine Visual Concepts was using for gameplay called ProPlay. This technology revolutionized every aspect of 2K’s basketball game’s gameplay. Through ProPlay, the developers could capture NBA player’s movements, dribble patterns, and shot form, resulting in more fluid and realistic gameplay.
Sports Gamers Online sat down with 2K Games’ Digital Marketing Director, Ronnie 2K, to discuss how vital ProPlay is to this year’s game, NBA 2K25, and if there are any more offensive innovations we don’t know about.
NBA 2K25: Year Two of ProPlay is ‘Robust’
Sat in a room in one of basketball’s most prestigious buildings, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, SGO interviewed Ronnie 2K, Digital Marketing Director of 2K Games, about NBA 2K25. The first major question we asked was, “Can you tell us about the new Pro play animations and any other new offensive innovations?”
“I mean, there’s a lot,” Ronnie said. “We’re starting with Pro play, you know, obviously it’s our second year, uh, being able to get a lot more data. And, uh, the way that people shoot in, Do their thing. We added nine thousand animations.”
Many sports titles have used gameplay engines to capture players’ live actions and generate new game animations. 2K is no stranger to this strategy, and this year, it has added more animations than ever in an NBA 2K title.
“Players like Jamal Murray for example, had Been injured, a lot of the times when we were doing the pro play stuff like and then we missed him, he was a covet and we met, you know like it’s just been something that we kept missing and so like guys like that.”
“We had a full season to work with and a lot of access and so awesome.” Ronnie explained, “That’s why [ProPlay] has become so much more robust in year two, and it totally changes the look and feel of the game.”
According to the developer, many more NBA players were available for motion capture, which is why the technology received such a massive boost in NBA 2K25.
NBA 2K25 is set to release for PC and consoles on September 6.
