In an interview with the Washington Post, ESA president Stan Pierre-Louis revealed that E3 will be back next year.
Over the last couple of years, E3 has faded from the video game convention scene due to the health risk of the pandemic. The absence of the yearly video game convention has resulted in the rise of other events like Summer Game Fest. Stan Pierre-Louis was asked if major game companies would still need E3 to promote their product.
I think what’s great about all this experimentation is that companies of all sizes are trying to figure out what works best to promote the product and the content that they are looking to share with consumers. – ESA President Stan Pierre-Louis.
The most notable absentee from E3 is PlayStation; the publishing powerhouse hasn’t been to E3 since 2018. However, Microsoft and Nintendo remained part of E3 until 2020, and other publishers like Bethesda and Square Enix took PlayStation’s place in the convention.
E3 vs. Summer Game Fest
Now that it’s looking very likely that E3 will make a return next year, what will happen with Summer Game Fest? Will companies have to choose between the two conventions to showcase their games?
It’s looking like there will be a battle for consumers’ eyes next summer. As of now, ex-E3 host Geoff Keighley has used the absence of E3 to promote a new digital event, Summer Game Fest. Since May 2020, Summer Game Fest has been the place to check out all the hottest games from the biggest developers.
Will you be watching E3 when it makes a return next year? Are you tuning into Summer Game Fest on June 9? Let us know in the comments.
