It would seem that EA Sports is ready to take FIFA to the big time of eSports tournaments. Today, EA released details about a new PlayStation 4 tournament that is exclusive to the console. The tournament will begin this Saturday, October 6th.

FIFA 19 Joining eSports

This tournament will be used as a qualifier for the Continental Cup, a FIFA 19 tournament that is presented by PlayStation which answers the question as to why it is exclusive to Sony’s console. The Continental Cup will take place during Paris Games Week which runs between October 26th and October 28th.

The Evolution of Competitive Play in Sports Gaming Communities

Players in the October 6th tournament will qualify for one of 31 slots in the Continental Cup 2018 Presented by PlayStation. Yes, that is the official name.

The 30 other spots will be filled through PS4 live and online FIFA 19 tournaments around the world. Sony is dedicated to sponsoring other FIFA 19 events in 2018 and 2019 which should give FIFA some eSports credibility going forward.

You can sign up for qualifiers online by clicking the link or by registering through your console. To register on the PS4, head to the Events app and search for PlayStation tournaments.

Personally, I love that sports gaming is starting to make runs at eSports. I think eSports is a big enough venture that games like Fortnite, Overwatch and FIFA can all live independently and companies can make their money.

EA Sports getting the support of Sony is going to be massive when you consider that over 82 million PlayStations have been sold throughout its lifespan as of July 31, 2018. Even if people aren’t playing FIFA, having the notification pop up on their PS4 notifications bar could make some people interested.

With Madden being an eSports success and having some big name tournaments, it only makes sense for EA to start branching out to its most globally successful franchise.
