In April 2022, Vicarious Visions was absorbed by Blizzard Entertainment, which led to many questions regarding the future of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater Remaster series. Unfortunately, a few months later, Tony Hawk himself revealed that the devs were planning a sequel, but it fell through.
However, it seems like there is light at the end of the tunnel for the series. During an interview on The Breakfast Club, Pro Skateboarder Tyshawn Jones revealed that a new THPS game is “about to come out.”
Tony Hawk Pro Skater Remaster is still alive!
During an interview on The Breakfast Club, Tyshawn Jones revealed that a new Tony Hawk Pro Skater Remaster was set to be released. The news drop came when Host Charlemagne asked Jones if he was going to be in the upcoming Skate. title from EA.
Jones said, “I don’t know, I’m in a Tony Hawk [game] coming out so…they have a new one they are remastering, that’s about to come out.”
We are not sure if it is a slip of the tongue from Jones or if there is a new game from the deceased series making a return. Sports Gamers Online has reached out to Tyshawn Jones for comment but we are still awaiting an answer.
Tony Hawk revealed that the series was dead
In the summer of 2022, Tony Hawk was featured on Andy Gentile’s Twitch stream. Gentile was the senior designer for THPS 1 + 2. Hawk revealed that the THPS remake developer planned to continue the series before Activision absorbed it.
Gentile: Yeah, dude, if there is a 3 + 4, or whatever, you know how to reach me.
Hawk: I mean, that was the plan. Even up until; the release date of [Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2], we were going 3 and 4. And then Vicarious got kind of absorbed, and then they were looking for other developers, and then it was over.
Tony Hawk claims that Activision took pitches from other developers but ultimately, the publisher didn’t trust anyone with the license.
“They took other pitches from other studios,” Hawk said, “like, what would you do with the THPS title? And [Activision] didn’t like anything they heard.”
The series was announced dead and a possible return was unlikely given that Blizzard Entertainment was acquired by Microsoft a year later. With Jones’ comments, the series seems to be truly alive and ready to return.
