This week, the Backyard Sports franchise made its triumphant return to the sports gaming world with the release of Backyard Baseball ’97. This is a remaster of the original Backyard Baseball game from 1997. This week, Playground Productions announced that five new remasters of classic Backyard Sports games are on the way. These remasters are Backyard Soccer ’98, Backyard Football ’99, Backyard Baseball ’01, Backyard Basketball ’01, Backyard Hockey ’02. There is no release date for any of these games. However, they are all available to wishlist on Steam.
For a series that was dormant for so long to have so many games on the way is incredibly exciting. We don’t know much about what these games will include. Based on Backyard Sports ’97, it seems that the games will try to be very faithful to the original releases. The Steam pages for these games mentioned features like online leaderboards.
One interesting part of the Backyard Baseball ’01 Steam page is the inclusion of 31 legendary pro players. The original Backyard Baseball 2001 game featured also featured 31 pro players. Some of these pros were Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Derek Jeter, and Barry Bonds. It will be interesting to see if it is the same 31 former players represented in the game, or if it will be an updated list of legends.
Backyard Basketball ’01 also mentioned that “2 Legendary Professional Basketball Players” will be featured in the game. Backyard Hockey ’02 advertises 8 former professional hockey players. Alongside the pros, all 30 of the classic Backyard Sports kids will be featured. The games will look and play just as they did over 20 years ago.
On the field, you will be able to earn the classic power-ups, take on the classic modes, and hear the commentary from Sunny Day and the rotation of color commentators.
