As January draws to a close, we are only a few weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting for Spring Training. Hard to believe we are already almost at the start of another MLB season. And with a new MLB season comes a new MLB The Show game. While we don’t know much about the new game, today we may have learned who the cover athlete(s) will be.
First Athlete Revealed
Last week, MLB The Show posted a teaser for MLB The Show 25 on their social media accounts. The teaser just showed the logo with some different colors changing around it. While it didn’t give away much information, it led many fans to think that the reveal of the new game was on its way soon.
Today proved those fans to be correct when Cincinnati Reds SS Elly De La Cruz posted a video to his Instagram account, saying he would be the cover athlete for MLB The Show 25.
De La Cruz is coming off a very impressive second season. After debuting in 2023, De La Cruz put up 5.2 WAR with 36 2Bs, 10 3Bs, and 25 HRs. He also led the NL with a whopping 67 stolen bases. These stats were enough for Elly to be named to his first All-Star game and finish 8th in NL MVP voting.
Call Me
But wait, that isn’t all. Not long after De La Cruz made his post, fellow superstar SS Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles made a post saying he was also supposed to be in the cover, and for Elly to “Call me.” It now looked like there were multiple players tapped to be on the cover of MLB The Show 25.
Henderson followed up his 2023 AL ROTY campaign with a phenomenal 2024 season. He posted 9.1 WAR with 37 HRs, 92 RBIs, and a 159 OPS+. He also helped lead Baltimore to their second straight playoff appearance.
Another One
Last but not certainly least, Pittsburgh Pirates rookie sensation Paul Skenes also got in on buzz. In a video posted to his social media accounts, Skenes tells Gunnar and Elly that they need to “settle this before the cover drops…” So it now sounds like the trio of young superstars are set to appear on the cover of MLB The Show 25. Whether all three will be together on the cover or if there will be three different covers is currently unknown.
Skenes burst onto the scene in 2024 with one of the best rookie seasons we have ever seen for a pitcher. Skenes put up 5.9 WAR, started 23 games, pitched 133 innings and struck out 170 batters. He also posted an 11-3 record and a 1.96 ERA. This was enough to win him the NL ROTY and for him to finish third in NL Cy Young voting.
Now we know who will be on the cover, we just don’t know what the cover will look like. The full reveal of the MLB The Show 25 cover will likely be revealed sometime in the next few days, along with pre-order info and hopefully some news about changes coming to the game itself.
