Last week, Electronic Arts officially announced the long-rumored sequel to their hit racing series, Need for Speed Unbound. From what we’ve seen, the latest take on the NFS series focuses heavily on presentation and player customization. The game’s latest sneak peek shows how graffiti comes to life in Need for Speed Unbound.

Customize your style. Choose your driving effects. Get noticed.

Need for Speed Unbound: The City is Your Canvas

In the sneak peek, we get our first look at the new driving effects in Need for Speed. These graffiti-style effects, known as “tags,” will initiate when you perform specific actions like drifting, near misses, and hitting jumps. Developer Criterion Games describes drivers as an artist, and the city is their canvas; players can customize how they want to paint the world through tags and obtain new graffiti throughout the game.

“We wanted to deliver an art style that matters for gameplay, one that clearly celebrates player actions, enhance the player experience, and rewards them along the way,” explains Darren White, Need for Speed Unbound’s art director at Criterion Games.

Need for Speed Unbound will feature a collection of street styles from multiple artists, such as Sentrock and JC Riviera. Their signature styles won’t just be embedded in the Unbound city landscape but can also be collected by the player.

Need for Speed Unbound

The Need for Speed franchise has had its ups and downs since its reboot in 2015. The series has changed developers frequently since 2012; From EA’s Ghost Games making the reboot to now, Criterion is stepping back in to give NFS a fresh code of paint.

Need for Speed Unbound is drifting on the scene on December 2 and will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
