UPDATE: EA has officially confirmed that, yes, FIFA 17 will be running on frostbite. No word on whether or not they plan to extend the engine’s use to their other franchises yet, but it seems a likely bet.

According to a report from Game Informer, FIFA 17 might be the next sports title from EA to move over to the Frostbite engine. The engine, which was initially used by EA for first person shooters like their Battlefield series, recently found itself as the powerhouse behind Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

Now EA wants to move other sports franchises over to the Frostbite engine, and they’re starting with FIFA 17, if Game Informer‘s sources are to be believed. Since a number of other EA franchises are using the engine now, including Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and the recently announced Battlefield One, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see EA Sports join the lineup.

Of course, right now this is just a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt. If FIFA and other franchises like Madden, NHL, and NBA LIVE decide to use the engine moving forward, we’ll probably hear more about it when EA gives their press conference at E3 this month.

That press conference will take place during EA Play on June 12, at 1 p.m. Pacific, or 4 p.m. Eastern if you’re on the eastern side of the country. We’ll be in attendance, so be sure to keep your eyes on SGO for the latest FIFA news during E3 this month.
