Steep is a game that lets players conquer some of the world’s biggest mountains. Players can tackle these alpine playgrounds using skis, snowboards, wingsuits, and paragliders. This is not a game that confines players to ski resorts or snow parks. Instead, players spend their time exploring the backcountry, looking for the best lines to traverse. Forests, bowls, glaciers, spines, and cliffs are all part of the fun. Players can rip down mountains at top speed, perform death-defying freestyle tricks, or fly through the sky. There are a lot of options.
Players can hit the slopes by themselves or team up with other riders. It’s possible to share custom lines with friends or challenge them to replicate tricks and wipeouts. Players can also watch videos of their exploits and share them with the world.
Steep takes place in two open world mountain ranges—one set in the European Alps and another in Alaska. Players are free to go wherever they want within these expansive environments. There are points of interest all over these mountain ranges called Drop Zones and these trigger challenges that award different levels of achievement.
There is a lot that has me excited about Steep, but what really strikes me about the gameplay footage is how realistic it is. The physics of skiing and riding are very accurate, and the topographic characteristics of these mountains are incredibly life-like. Steep could be the most realistic game of its kind, and for extreme winter sports enthusiasts like myself; that is exciting. Let’s hope Ubisoft can deliver.
Ubisoft is currently recruiting gamers for their beta testing. Anyone interested in being a part of the beta or just learning more about the game should check out the Steep website.
Steep is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and Windows December 2.
