Last week, we reported that a former WWE video game writer stated in a YouTube video that there will be no WWE 2K game in 2020. While this rumor made the rounds on social media, we didn’t receive official news on WWE 2K21 until today, as WWE confirmed the report to be true.
News on No WWE 2K21
In case you’re unaware of what happened last week, Justin Leeper, the former narrative lead for the ‘Road to Wrestlemania’ mode in the Smackdown vs. Raw series, stated in a YouTube video that there would be no WWE 2K21 game this year. Given Leeper’s status as a former WWE game writer, many believed this to be true. However, we didn’t receive any confirmation of this rumor until now.
Today, WWE released information regarding their earnings report for the first quarter of 2020. While most of the news was good from WWE’s point of view, as net revenue was up compared to last year’s first quarter, it wasn’t from a gaming perspective.
WWE confirmed during the earnings report conference call that there will be no WWE 2K21 this year. WWE Interim Chief Financial Officer Frank Riddick was asked about the franchise during the call, and stated that no WWE 2K game will be released in 2020. Riddick did not disclose as to why no WWE 2K game will be released this year.
One last note on the conference call is in regards to whether there will be a WWE-related game at all this year. Leeper stated in that video that circulated almost two weeks ago that a non-simulation game was in the works, and slated to be released later this year. Riddick did not confirm that there would be a non-simulation game this year, but he was not asked about it.
