Sports games continue to be big sellers in the video game industry. According to the NPD group, Madden NFL 22, FIFA 22, NBA 2K22, and Forza Horizon 5 sit on the top 20 best sellers list of January 2022. The games rank at 4, 7, 14, and 17, respectively. The rankings are compiled with physical copies and digital downloads. However, digital downloads are included at the publisher’s discretion.
4 Sports Titles on the NPD Best Sellers
Not much has changed from a month ago. Both Madden 22 and FIFA 22 remain top ten sellers. However, NBA 2K22 has dropped from 9th to 14th.
The best sellers on PlayStation include Madden NFL 22, FIFA 22, and NBA 2K22 at 3, 4, and 9 respectively. On Xbox, Madden, Forza, NBA 2K22, and FIFA are top 10 sellers. Nintendo only has Mario Kart 8 on its top seller’s list.
In terms of hardware, PlayStation 5 continues to remain at the top. Xbox is ranked second in both units and dollars. The best-selling accessory, however, is the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller.
Hard numbers are not disclosed for any of the categories at this time.
NPD also revealed that overall spending in January 2022 declined two percent. However, hardware spending saw a 22% increase. Despite the hardware gains, low supply continues to impact video game hardware across all current-generation platforms. Nonetheless, gaming continues to be a lucrative business.
With sports games being as popular as they are, it is not hard to see how pivotal they are to the gaming industry. Despite the flaws, sports games continue to move the industry forward in different ways. Hopefully supply of consoles will get better in the coming months. Demand has continued to increase while supply remains inconsistent.
