It’s beginning to look a lot like new console season. Following the PS5 Pro’s launch in November of last year, and the Nintendo Switch 2 being revealed last week, we are starting to get a look at what the next generation of video game consoles might look like. Now, a new leak could possibly be giving us a look at what Sony has in store for the tenth generation of consoles.
PlayStation 6 Coming in 2027?
According to a new leak, the PlayStation 6 could be hitting store shelves sooner than many people thought. Kepler, an insider who previously leaked the PS5 Pro specs, said in a post on NeoGaf this week that the PS6 was “design complete.” Kepler also said that “A0 tapeout” was scheduled for later this year. A0 tapeout is the process of designing the first iteration of a system’s chipset. Kepler says that Sony usually launches a console around two years after A0 tapeout takes place.
If this information is correct, that could put a potential PlayStation 6 launch around holiday 2027. While this may feel too soon for a new console, it would actually be a pretty normal time. The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, 7 years after the PlayStation 4 launched. The PS4 also launched a little over 7 years after the PS3 launched. So a 2027 release date for the PS6 actually seems to fit Sony’s normal timeline for rolling out new consoles.
In March of last year, Sony did say that the PS5 was in “the latter stage of its life cycle.” As of November 2024, the PS5 had sold over 65 million units, making it the 13th best-selling video game consoles of all-time.
With all of these leaks and rumors coming out, it is sure to be interesting to see when Sony decides to reveal the PS6. What are you hoping to see from Sony’s next generation of consoles?
