2024 has been a rough year so far for the video game industry. Multiple developers and publishers have announced massive layoffs throughout the first few months of the year. Earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive announced they would be laying off around 5% of their staff. Now, more details have emerged about which studios those layoffs would effect, with two studios reportedly being shut down.

Roll7 and Intercept Games Shut Down

According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Take-Two Interactive will be shutting down two studios as part of the layoffs announced earlier this year. The first studio is Roll7. This developer was founded in 2008, and is best known for their Olli Olli series. In 2022, they also released the critically successful Rollerdrome, which was nominated for Best Indie Game at the 2022 Golden Joysticks Awards.

The other studio shutting down is Intercept Games. This developer is best known for space simulation title Kerbal Space Program 2. According to Schreier’s report, Take-Two plans to close Intercept’s office in Seattle and cut 70 jobs, which is about how many people worked at Intercept.

Both of these studios were part of Private Division. This is a label under Take-Two that they use to publish smaller titles.  According to Bloomberg, other staff within Private Division have also been affected by this round of layoffs.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, a spokesperson for Take-Two issued the following statement: “On April 16th, Take-Two announced a cost reduction program to identify efficiencies across its business and to enhance the Company’s margin profile, while still investing for growth. As part of these efforts, the Company is rationalizing its pipeline and eliminating several projects in development and streamlining its organizational structure, which will eliminate headcount and reduce future hiring needs. The Company is not providing additional details on this program.

“On April 18th Private Division successfully launched Moon Studio’s No Rest for the Wicked. The label continues to make updates to Kerbal Space Program 2 and plans to release Wētā Workshop Game Studio’s Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game in the second half of 2024.”
