Last week, Sony introduced full details of its PlayStation 5 Pro, the company’s mid-generation upgrade. However, the first details of Sony’s next-generation console have surfaced.
According to a report by British news agency Reuters, The PlayStation 6 will once again include an AMD processor and could feature backward compatibility.
PlayStation 6 News
According to Reuters, Intel and Sony had conversations in 2022 about Intel, including its processor in the PS6, but the company lost the contract due to a dispute over profit.
This means that, once again, AMD will be the processor that Sony has in its future console generation. While it might be a bit early to discuss the PS6, the PS5 is already four years old and is likely entering the latter years of its lifecycle.
In terms of backward compatibility, this feature is important to the God of War publisher, and moving to Intel would have jeopardized the players’ ability to enjoy older games on the PS6. However, the conversation about backwards compatibility is in the air for Sony, and nothing is official.
“Moving from AMD, which made the PlayStation 5 chip, to Intel would have risked backwards compatibility, which was a subject of discussion between Intel and Sony engineers and executives,” according to the report. “Ensuring backward compatibility with prior versions of the PlayStation would have been costly and taken engineering resources.”
The PS5 Pro
Moving to the near future, the PS5 Pro was revealed by Sony last week. The new mid-generation hardware will be released on November 7, with a hefty price of 700 USD.
While the initial price is controversial, the console will not be released with a stand or disk drive; both can be purchased separately: The stand is 30 USD, and the disk drive is 80 USD.
The PS5 Pro will be significantly more powerful than its predecessor, sporting a GPU upgrade of 67% more Compute Unites and 28% faster memory. In addition, the console will support ‘Advanced Ray-Tracing’ and ‘AI-Driven Upsacling.’ For more details on what the PS5 Pro brings to the table, check out PlayStations blog post here.
