WWE 2K23 Universe Mode Updates Rivalries, but Leaves More to be Desired

In a mode that seems to get the least improvements and touch-ups every year by 2K, it finally looks like some meaningful changes are on the way for WWE 2K23’s Universe Mode. That’s not to say nothing ever gets done, but it seems like it’s always baby steps. This year, fans of the mode are hoping to get fundamental changes.

WWE 2K23 Universe Mode Updates

Rivalry System Updates

This year, an update to the rivalry system is in place. This means a new momentum system is available to gain a momentum resource as their rivalry progresses. Momentum can then be spent to perform rivalry actions leading up to Premium Live Events. So now the rivalries no longer just play out how they play out. You now have much more control over what you can do. For example, you can use momentum resources to, say, hit a wrestler with a chair before a match, shake their hand after a match, or even beat them down before or after a match. This gives you much more control over how you want a rivalry to play out.

Turn on Your Opponent

This also goes the same for your opponent. If you lose a match, they will pick a rivalry action to either progress or possibly end the story. One of the coolest parts about all of this is the fact that this lets you turn heel or babyface if you want to, based on your actions.

Of course, just like in previous years, you can set the length of rivalries, along with their intensities. Have your own shows and use current wrestlers, or a show with legends only, or even mix it up a bit and have a little of both.

New Ways to Play

This year’s Universe Mode aims to bring a new level of freedom to the player. This should be a welcome addition to the stagnation that has plagued the mode for the past number of years, and make many fans of the mode happy.

While the mode still may not be as fully fleshed out as some are looking for, this seems to be a good start.
