FIFA 21 Source Code Potentially Stolen Amidst EA Data Breach

FIFA 21 Data Breach

As reported early on June 10, Electronic Arts is currently investigating assessing damages caused by a recent hacker data breach. The publishing giant is known for several big name AAA titles including FIFA 21, Madden 21, Battlefield, and more.

EA investigating recent data breach

Earlier, EA confirmed with Motherboard, the tech media outlet, the company suffered a data breach. EA also confirmed the information listed by the hackers indeed consists of the stolen data.

“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen,” claims an EA spokesperson.

In addition, EA added no player data had been accessed during the breach. Gamers both avid and casual should have no reason to believe their personal or private information is at risk. As one may assume, EA has made several improvements to security following the incident and expect the impact to their current projects to be minimal or nonexistent.

At this time, stolen data includes the source code for FIFA 21 and the company’s proprietary engine, Frostbite. This is in addition to other development as well. Hackers have shown evidence of their access to EA data and appear as though they may be hoping to sell. You can check out the forum screenshot taken by BleepingComputer which shows, to some degree, the extent of the damages.

It’s unlikely another developer will benefit from such a data breach or even outright use EA’s code. However, this does allow those outside of the industry data needed to develop methods around some of EA’s safeguards, create cheats, or expose certain internal communications.
