The Madden Cover is one of the most illustrious covers NFL players can land themselves on. Similarly to the end-of-the-year awards, Madden covers represent a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. However, what comes with the Madden cover is the Madden curse. Is Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen the latest player to endure the Madden Curse?
Brief History of Madden Curse
Since athletes started making covers of Madden, a very underwhelming or outright tragic occurrence would ensue. For example, after Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick landed the cover in Madden NFL 2004, he was ensnared in the dog fighting scandal that landed him in prison and took years off his prime. Peyton Hillis landed the cover of Madden NFL 2012, had a lackluster season, and eventually dropped out of the league shortly after.
Josh Allen, the cover athlete of Madden NFL 2024, continues the trend. Josh Allen currently leads the league in interceptions with 11. He also has two fumbles to his name. To say that a former MVP candidate has been downright awful would be an understatement. It’s been so bad that Dallas Cowboys star cornerback Trevon Diggs, brother of Josh Allen’s teammate Stefon Diggs, expressed wanting to get his brother out of Buffalo. Stefon Diggs was only targeted five times in a 24-22 loss to the Denver Broncos.
Trevon Diggs even mentioned that Josh Allen didn’t started putting up elite numbers since Stefon’s arrival in Buffalo in 2020. Perhaps there is some truth to it. Josh Allen put up a career-best in passing yards in the same year Diggs arrived.
To some, the Madden curse has struck again. However, some people think the curse is over as Patrick Mahomes won a Superbowl the following season of his cover on Madden 2023.
