EA Sports Announces New Next-Gen PGA Tour

EA Sports PGA Tour

For the first time since 2015, EA Sports is returning to the virtual links. Via a new, long-term deal with the PGA Tour, EA is set to launch a next-gen golf game.

“EA Sports and the PGA Tour have created some of the most memorable golf video game experiences together, and we couldn’t be more excited to expand our sports portfolio with a new golf title on next-gen hardware,” said Cam Weber, EVP & GM at EA Sports.

EA Sports PGA Tour will utilize the infamous Frostbite engine. With its new title, EA promises “stunning fidelity, breathtaking immersive environments, and approachable, dynamic gameplay.” EA helped popularize the golf video game genre with the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series. From 1998 to 2013, Woods was the face of golf gaming, with some serious classics dropping in the mid-2000’s.

This announcement comes on the heels of 2K’s recent agreement with the 11-time PGA Tour Player of the Year. Earlier this month, 2K Sports reached a long-term, exclusivity agreement with Woods. Notably, the partnership includes rights to Tiger’s name and likeness. In addition, the legendary golfer will serve as an executive producer and consultant for the series.

EA’s PGA Tour franchise isn’t its only popular game making a return on next-gen consoles. Back in February, the company announced that a college football game is on the way. EA Sports College Football is expected to launch some time in 2023 with over 100 teams set to be featured. No release date has been announced yet for EA Sports PGA Tour, but that news should be revealed in the coming months.

All in all, it will be interesting to see how the two new golf titles perform. There has seemingly been a lack of competition in sports games for some time now. Perhaps we’ll have a new rivalry on our hands? Hopefully both titles can keep the ball in the fairway, meaning a win for all of us.
