Last month, the NHL 23 eSports season came to a close as the 2023 EA Sports NHL 23 World Championship concluded in Nashville. The NHL and DreamHack Sports Gamers crowned Joseph “Jos x 10” Olmstead, the 2023 EA Sports NHL 23 World Champion. Jos x 10 is the first World Champion to be crowned since 2019, and just the third competitor to ever be crowned World Champion.
NHL 23 World Championship
The NHL 23 World Championship featured more than 80,000 games and over 350,000 goals. This was the first time since 2019 that the best CHEL players in Europe and North America faced off in an in-person international competition.
Jos x 10 finished as the runner-up in North America to earn himself a spot in the World Championship. The competition was held on June 27th in Nashville, Tennessee. After the 4-player round-robin, Jos x 10 matched up with European runner-up Teemu “Temppanen” Karvonen. Jos x 10 won two very close games against Temppanen to move on to the finals. Jos x 10 then had to face 2023 European Champion Erik “EKl” Tammenpää. After a high-scoring first game saw Jos x 10 win 7-5, Jos x 10 won game 2 2-1 to secure the World Championship. This victory is Jos x 10’s first World Championship and makes him just the third person ever to win the title. Along with the Championship belt, Jos x 10 walks away with the $28,000 grand prize. - Erik “EKI” Tammenpää (New York Islanders) – $11,000
- Teemu “Temppanen” Karvonen (Anaheim Ducks) – $7,000
- Samuel “Cadcooks” Landry (Chicago Blackhawks) – $5,000
The NHL 23 World Championship was part of a significant offseason period for the NHL. The weekend in Nashville was full of hockey. The 2023 NHL Awards preceded the competition. The day after the final was the 2023 NHL Draft. Some of the top draft prospects joined “Wayne D” Danielson joined the fans to watch the Jos x 10 win the title.
