Is FIFA 23 going to free-to-play? That just may be the case. According to FIFA insider Donk, it will not only be going free-to-play, but it will add Crossplay to the series. This week, Konami announced that eFootball, formerly known as PES and FIFA’s rival, is free-to-play. Naturally, fans wondered if EA would follow suit. According to this report, it just may.

FIFA 23 could be free-to-play
While eFootball going free-to-play seemed fitting, the same can’t be said for FIFA. After all, it brings in so much money. It sells well year after year. Game sales make a small amount of revenue. Most of the revenue comes from Microtransactions themselves. With that in mind, transitioning to a free-to-play model makes sense.
Until the publishing titan confirms this, take this information with a grain of salt. EA has its hands full. Last Thursday, EA held its EA Play Live showcasing the titles that have been worked on. Madden 22, Battlefield 2042, FIFA 22, were all showcased. Naturally, nothing of free-to-play came up.
If FIFA is going free-to-play with FIFA 23, we won’t hear about it until next summer. The move is something that most players will be receptive to, but some fans have been critical of Konami’s move for a variety of reasons. Since eFootball went to a free-to-play model, fans have speculated whether EA would do the same. If they do, this will be a big move especially considering EA’s track record. But it won’t be without its critics.
If eFootball is successful with the free-to-play model, perhaps this will jar EA enough to implement its own. FIFA will always sell well.
FIFA 22 is set to release on October 1, 2021, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One Xbox Series X|S, and Switch.
