FIFA 22 Game Test to Highlight Cross-Play Potential

One of the rumors circling FIFA 23 is that the game will feature cross-play this year. Well, that rumor is looking very likely. EA announced a cross-play test is coming to FIFA 22 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Stadia in a recent FIFA Pitch Notes post.

This beta will allow Electronic Arts to test out cross-play capabilities ahead of FIFA 23‘s launch this fall. The two modes available for this trial are Seasons and Online Friendlies. Electronic Arts hopes the feedback from this test helps them in future FIFA titles.

While we want to enable our players to play with as many friends and others as possible, we limited the test to these two modes with the aim of reducing the chance of introducing new issues into the game. We are confident that the game data and feedback that we get from these two modes will help inform how Cross-play could further be implemented in future titles.

How to Use FIFA 22’s Cross-Play Feature

According to the Pitch Notes, it’s relatively easy to participate. Once the cross-play test is activated, a prompt will ask you to enable cross-play capabilities. Once activated, you can customize your cross-play experience from the Matchmaking Option screen in the FIFA 22 menu.

And that’s it. There is no need to sign up or anything. All you need is a next-gen console and a copy of FIFA 22.

At the moment, we don’t know if FIFA 22 will become fully cross-play before FIFA 23. Nevertheless, it’s about time EA implemented this feature into its popular football title. Other triple-A titles like Fortnite and Apex Legends fully adopted cross-play years ago. On the flipside, FIFA 23 will benefit from this beta to ensure a smooth user experience.
