Amid the conflict with Russia and Ukraine, Microsoft has made its presence felt. Microsoft announced that it is suspending all new sales of Microsoft products and services in Russia. The statement comes from Brad Smith, President & Vice Chair of Microsoft.
Microsoft Suspends Sales in Russia
In the statement, Smith stated that Microsoft is working with the governments of the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. They stated, “we are stopping many aspects of our business in Russia in compliance with governmental sanctions decisions.”
Smith continued by stating that protecting the cyber security of Ukraine has been a priority. “We continue to work proactively to help cybersecurity officials in Ukraine defend against Russian attacks,” he stated, “including most recently a cyberattack against a major Ukrainian broadcaster.”
Nintendo, Sony Take a Stand
Microsoft joins a myriad of companies taking a financial stand against Russia’s role in the conflict in Ukraine. For starters, Electronic Arts pulled the Russian National team in FIFA 22 and NHL 22 from their respective games. Then, Activision-Blizzard and Epic Games halted sales of their products to Russia.
Microsoft has taken a more direct approach against Russia. However, it isn’t the only one. After the Prime Minister of Ukraine called on Microsoft and Sony to suspend Russian gaming accounts, Sony quietly pulled Gran Turismo 7 from Russia. However, the company has yet to make an official statement.
Nintendo eShop payments have also been suspended in Russia. In Russia, the eShop is temporarily in maintenance mode as of now. It is unclear if Nintendo itself placed the suspension or if an official statement will be released.
