Last year, we reported that 2K and FIFA were going to develop a soccer/football title. This news was fresh off the heels of FIFA and EA Sports’s deal expiring, which led to the new EA Sports FC series. However, the football governing body is still exploring ways to continue its brand in the video game world.
What’s the latest FIFA/2K rumor?
According to Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw, FIFA and 2K are close to securing a deal to develop a new football title.
What kind of football title is the big question here? Mike Straw claims his sources have informed him that “all options are on the table.”
So far, both FIFA and 2K have not responded to multiple requests for comment.
A couple of sources have told me that “all options are on the table” regarding a relationship when I asked if it was for a brand new game, a supercard release, or part of the LEGO game.
Another source said talks have been going on for some time, but any agreement being reached is being kept close to the vest if it’s happened yet.
One theory is that 2K wants to develop another Lego title with FIFA licensing. This could be the case due to the publisher’s recent 3-game deal with Lego. However, we are not sure what the two companies are planning, but we are curious to see what comes of it.
Writers Opinion
If the mystery game that 2K and FIFA are developing isn’t a Lego, another Lego title, then a lucrative card-based or mobile game will likely result from the deal.
FIFA and EA Sports made so much money with the FIFA Ultimate Team modle, and I expect that the company wants to continue making that kind of money but with a new publisher.
