The excitement of the real NBA’s free agency period provided a bit of speculation over who might star on the cover of this year’s NBA 2K. Today, 2K went ahead and confirmed at least one cover athlete. This year, NBA 2K23 will be graced by one of the greatest. Michael Jordan will be on the cover of two editions of NBA 2K23.

Greatness is Calling – NBA 2K23 Michael Jordan Edition

The trailer, posted today, recreates Jordan’s famous dunk from the free throw line. Fine print on the trailer claims this is gameplay footage from Next Gen NBA 2K23. Which, if true, is impressive, because the folks at 2K keep finding new ways to make these games look better than the last. The developers posted screenshots of Jordan in NBA 2K23, though he looks much more exciting in motion.

Jordan will be the cover star for his own titular NBA 2K23 Michael Jordan Edition. Presumably, this will mirror last year’s 75th Anniversary and the previous year’s Mamba Forever Editions. He’s also featured on this year’s Championship Edition. This is a new pre-order option that comes bundled with a year’s subscription to NBA League Pass.

Jordan’s influence on NBA 2K23 will be more than his appearance on the cover. 2K announced the return of The Jordan Challenge, a game mode where players will be able to recreate iconic Jordan moments like the dunk shown in the trailer. The challenges will mirror the ones available in NBA 2K11 but rebuilt from the ground up in 2K23’s New Gen engine.

One Cover Athlete Down – Who Will Join Him?

Of course, this still leaves a few unknown cover athletes. The $59.99 Standard Edition, which reportedly will feature Phoenix Suns SG Devin Booker, will likely be revealed when pre-orders go live on July 7. Personally, I would love to see another WNBA Edition like last year. The new Championship Edition might take its place, however. In theory, there could be infinite editions of NBA 2K23. We’ll find out for sure on July 7.
