Free-to-play and gunning for the crown
No doubt when most think of football video games, the first IP to come to mind is likely Madden NFL with not many close seconds in terms of popularity. Maximum Football 23 aims to change the discussion in a very big way. Back in February, we learned some critical information regarding MF23, including a move to Unreal Engine and going Free-to-Play.
While moving the franchise to Unreal is a clear victory for Modus Games, allowing the game to capitalize on better physics-based gameplay, some remain skeptical of the Free-to-Play aspect. The nature of Free-to-Play insinuates the studio will be using other methods to monetize the game. Oftentimes, this takes the form of loot boxes and arguably predatory practices.
For obvious reasons, many felt concerned over the upcoming change; however, Modus Games took the time to address the concerns of the community. While Modus stressed “No, Maximum Football will not include loot boxes or any kind of randomized content”, we have not gotten details on just how the studio plans to monetize the game. That said, during the QA, Modus made a point to express that the new format will not lower the game’s overall quality, something that concerned players of eFootball when it went F2P.
Missing in action
Aside from that, Maximum Football 23 is already shaping up to make sure to include a few things players are missing in Madden 23.
When it comes to sports simulation, the presentation is just as big as the gameplay. Many wondered where the refs went in the latest Madden. We learned the refs were removed due to the visual detraction, meaning they consumed resources yet failed to look as good as the players. While they will not be added back to Madden 22, we do know they will be included in Maximum Football 23.
