Sports video games have been a popular pastime for decades, ever since the early days of gaming consoles like the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Today, sports video games are more popular than ever, with millions of players around the world enjoying games like FIFA, NBA 2K, Madden NFL, and more. But who exactly spends the most time playing these games?

To answer that question, we need to look at demographic data on sports video game players. According to a 2019 study by the NPD Group, 69% of sports video game players are male, while 31% are female. This gender disparity is not unique to sports video games; it is a common trend in the gaming industry as a whole. However, it’s worth noting that players of all ages enjoy sports video games, from children to seniors.

A more recent survey conducted by ExpressVPN reveals that Millennials are more dedicated to gaming than their Gen Z. The study, which includes responses from 1,000 professed gamers in the U.S. and 1,000 in the UK, shows that Millennials are more likely to play video games on a regular basis and for longer periods of time than other generations. This is not surprising, given that this age group is more likely to have disposable income to spend on gaming consoles and other equipment, as well as more free time to devote to playing games. They also tend to have a stronger emotional connection to gaming, with many citing it as a form of stress relief and social connection.

In terms of how much time is spent playing sports video games, a survey by GlobalWebIndex in 2020 found that, on average, players spend 7.3 hours per week playing these games. This number varies widely depending on age and gender. The average time spent playing per week among male sports video game players was 8.5 hours, compared to 5.5 hours for female players. This disparity could be due to several factors, including differences in interest, access to gaming consoles or PCs, and societal expectations around gender and gaming.

The survey also found that the most time spent playing sports video games was among players aged 25-34, averaging 8.4 hours per week. Players aged 16-24 were close behind, averaging 8.2 hours per week. This suggests that players in their mid-20s to mid-30s are the most dedicated sports video game players, at least in terms of time spent playing.

It’s worth noting that these numbers are just averages, and there are certainly players who spend much more time playing sports video games. Professional esports players, for example, may spend over 10 hours per day practicing and competing in their respective games. These players are a small minority and do not represent the typical sports video game player.

So why do people spend so much time playing sports video games? For many, it’s a way to experience the thrill of competition and to feel like they are part of their favorite sports leagues and teams. Sports video games allow players to control their favorite athletes, make strategic decisions, and experience the highs and lows of victory and defeat. Others enjoy the social aspect of playing with friends or online opponents and connecting with other fans of their favorite sports. And for some, it’s simply a way to relax and unwind after a long day.

In conclusion, sports video games continue to be a popular form of entertainment for millions worldwide, and the demographic of sports video game players skews towards younger males. While the average amount of time spent playing these games varies, there is significant variation depending on age and gender, whether it’s for the love of sports, competition, or simply for fun.
