NHL 21 isn’t the only hockey game releasing on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this fall. If you haven’t heard, NHL 94 Rewind launches on October 30 as a standalone free bonus for those who preordered NHL 21.
The game is a tribute to the classic NHL 94 that many still view as not only one of the best hockey games of all time, but one of the best sports video games period. Of course, with any new release there are plenty of questions about what fans can expect. Thanks to an story from ESPN, many questions have been answered.
Here’s what you need to know about NHL 94 Rewind.
No Online Multiplayer
EA Sports wants NHL 94 Rewind to be reminiscent of the days of gaming past when the original version of the game launched in 1993. Back then there was no such thing as online multiplayer. If you wanted to play with friends, you had to either go to there home or invite them over to yours. With this new installment, that sentiment will hold true. If you want to play with other players, they’ll have to sit down right next to you for some classic couch co-op fun.
That said, it was mentioned by NHL producer Sean Ramjagsingh that if the demand is there and enough people are playing, online multiplayer could be something added down the line.
No Roster Updates
Sticking with how it used to be, NHL 94 Rewind will ship with one set of rosters with no updates to them. The rosters for the game will be based on the end of the 2019-20 season, meaning that players like Taylor Hall won’t be on the Buffalo Sabres and Alex Pietrangelo won’t be playing in Sin City.
NHL 94 Rewind vs NHL 21 Rating Differences
Sticking with the players, you’ll find in the game that the ratings of players will be different than those in NHL 21. While you won’t find any 30 or 40-overall players on the rosters, you also won’t see players carry over the same ratings between games.
Players are rated in throwback game on a different scale due to it only featuring NHL players. The example used with this specific scale was Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen. In NHL 21, he’s an 85 overall, but that falls to a 72 overall in NHL ’94 Rewind.
